Several people have enquired as to how the families staying in our new leper colony are going. We are pleased to let you know that things are going quite well with all of them. Everyone has settled into their new homes and are very happy with everything. We did have a few small problems with the water ‘hand pump’ and some issues with the electricity initially but we were able to fix them quite easily. The monsoon season is approaching and so we will plant a bunch of fruit trees which will not only provide fruit but also some much appreciated shade in the hot summer months. All of our leprosy patients receive a pension from the government but we are working to get that amount increased.
Leprosy is a bacterial infection that spreads through the entire body of the infected person, it causes permanent damage to nerves, skin, limbs and eyes. Often the person with leprosy gets cuts, burns or infections and does not even realize (which generally means that infection spreads). Many loose limbs, fingers, toes, eyes, ears and even the cartilage in their nose. It almost completely treatable though once the physical damage is done it often cannot be ‘un-done’. We have ensured that all of the people in our colony have had their leprosy treated. People who have suffered from leprosy generally are never able (even if physically capable) to obtain employment in India and in almost all cases are cast out from their homes/communities and forced to beg.
