If we listed every project we/our volunteers have completed in the last few years this page would go on and on! In this section are a few of the earlier projects that we completed that might be of interest. There are plenty that we have left our though!

Below is a list of just some of the many projects that we have completed in the last few years...

NURSERY PLAYGROUND

Thanks to the help of a group of volunteer workers from the USA and Australia we have been able to restore our playground to a more "playable" state. This project has been a benifit to both our nursery kids and also to the school which is adjacent to the playground (and uses its facilities). Funding for this project came from First Baptist Church, Iowa Falls. We would like to thank them very much for how they have blessed us. New equiptment was purchased as well as old equiptment getting a much needed repair.

MAIN KITCHEN

A big project that has now been completed is a complete overhaul of the main kitchen. For years the walls have been stained by the smoke put out by old wood ovens and stoves (which have now mostly been replaced by gas stoves). After a high-pressure wash, a good scrub down and some chiseling we were able to render and tile the walls. New work benches were constructed and also 3 new steel washing up sinks to replace the old concrete ones. There was a major problem with lighting so after some planning we broke two large holes in the ceiling and constructed 2 large sun lights. The floor was also raised half a foot to allow for better water run off and also to make it more sanitary. There are still a few small jobs to do in the kitchen, repairing the pantry's and possibly the purchase of a new fridge next chance we get.

HIGH PRESSURE WATER SYSTEM

A project that has really made an impact on the mission is the implementation of a new "high pressure" water system. Serviced by 3 auto-switching pumps the new system provides water at about 30 PSI across the entire mission. Over 800 meters of PVC piping has been laid and there is still more to be done. The new system is being attached to the old system, which was essentially hand pumps and half a dozen water tanks situated on various rooftops across the compound -each filled by individual motors. This new system provides safe and clean water to over 220 people.

SCHOOL REGISTRATION

For many years the school on the mission has been running, but due to insufficient funding/staffing it has never been Government Accredited. Thanks to some new staff we have decided to work steadily towards getting accreditation. One of the most noticeable differences is that the kids are now all wearing uniforms, school hours have also been extended. Having a registered education will really give the children a big step forwards when they come to searching for employment. We hope to be registered up to grade 8 by this next school year and registered to grade 12 by 2014. This is a long and difficult process and takes hours upon hours of work.

SCHOOL RENOVATION

Along with seeking registration for our school we have also just completed constructing 2 new rooms. One which will be used as a class room the other as a staff room & Principals Office. This will not be the last of the renovations that we plan to undertake. We also have plans for making a new school, which we hope to undertake in the coming year.

DINING ROOM TABLES

Thanks to donations and support of some people in Hobart, Tasmania we have been able to cover our dining room tables with new plastic. The old plastic (which was about 10 years old) was home to lots of creepy crawlies. The tables have gotten a new layer of plywood put on the top and then covered with a sort of linoleum plastic by our carpenter Bidiya.

NURSERY PAINTING

We are constantly having visitors out here to spend time helping us out here on the mission and one of the biggest ways that they can be of help to us is by getting involved in the constant painting projects that we have going on over here. Paint is very cheap and generally the hardest thing for us is actually finding someone with the time to do the painting! One of our volunteers added a creative touch to his work in the nursery and painted brilliant designs, cartoons and pictures. The children have never seen or experienced anything like this and loved to sit with him as he painted. It has really made a fantastic difference in the way the nursery looks.

MAXIMIZING RETURNS

For years now the Farm Manager, Eugene, has been working at turning ground that has never been used for anything in to ground that brings healthy returns. From planting ginger and turmeric in our mango orchid to mustard out by the main entrance Eugene is not stopping until every unused piece of land is utilized. Many of the fields have had their borders expanded as the old drain systems for moving water are no longer needed. We are also constantly planting fruit trees and are already seeing the returns from the ones we have planted in the last 4 years. The trees include varieties such as mango, lychee, pawpaw, banana, guavas, pears, and custard apples. The idea behind this project is to get enough fruit being produced to provide the children with all they can eat!
